Although we deal with Imperial eagles on a daily basis, in most cases we wouldn’t be able to share much more information about ringed birds than their place of birth and - thanks to a few observations - the territory of their choice.
There are special individuals however, whose life history is unconventional, so they definitely deserve a more detailed introduction.

After the discovery of a dead white-tailed eagle, a major case of poisoning in the Waldviertel (Lower Austria) was uncovered in early 2019. Now the hunter who had by then been in charge of the hunting area was convicted of poisoning and sentenced for cruelty against animals.
Czech Society for Ornithology has a new member in dog searching unit. Her name is Irbis and she is a Chesapeake Bay Retriever .

In April the poisoned common buzzard was found near Vraclav in Ústí nad Orlicí region in Czechia. The analysis confirmed poisoning by Stutox II, rodenticide for killing especially common voles.

Great news from Serbia this spring. Bird protection and Study Society of Serbia/BirdLife Serbia (BPSSS) is reporting that in the fourth year of realization PannonEagle Life project, Serbian population of Imperial Eagles finally got two new nesting pairs, which makes them three in total with the old pair named Bora and Erzika.

On 25th March 2020 the poisoned White-tailed eagle was found near Roudnice in Králové Hradec region in Czechia. The analysis confirmed poisoning by carbofuran. Also 2 unhatched chicks died because the other eagle had left the nest.

The White-tailed eagle family was poisoned in Bzenecká Doubrava - Strážnické Pomoraví, which is a Special Protection Area in the Czech Republic. It was a couple that have been nesting on the site since 2017, having one chick each year.

Only a month went by since our last news of two raptor poisoning incidents within the Hortobágy National Park Directorate (HNPI), but we have to report two new suspected poisoning cases once again. The toxicological examinations are still ongoing.

MME’s detection canine units and the national park ranger service have been continuing its work during the coronavirus pandemic. From January till mid-April, numerous birds of prey, mammals showing symptoms of poisoning as well as poisoned baits were found at seven different crime scenes so far.

Even the national quarantine in the Czech Republic did not stop poachers from killing. This year, CSO already recorded 6 cases of poisoned Red Kites.
